A New Coil Is On It's Way

I called Hear Always today (Cochlear's Customer Support), and ordered a new coil for Christian's CI per our audiologist's instructions. Ends up that H3 error is a warning sign that the coil is going bad.

The really wonderful customer service rep graciously explained how to switch out the magnet on the coil, but I still don't get it. So, parents of other Freedom kiddos, if you could please leave me a comment and give me some sort of idea on how to change the magnet out without totally wrecking the thing, I WOULD MUCH APPRECIATE IT!

I don't know.

That's my husband's job.

;) (Kidding.)

It is just basically screwed in there like a screw. Take a quarter and use it like a screwdriver. Hold the outside edge of the coil in one hand and turn the quarter with the other. It should loosen pretty quickly and then you can use your fingers to continue turning it.

I am pretty sure it goes counter-clockwise to loosen. (Left loosey - righty tighty)

It is the same way you loosen it to get it further away from the scalp. You just keep turning it until it pops out.

Does that make sense at all?

To change the magnet, just twist it out, use your thumb on top and middle finger underneath and turn, that's worked best for me. He has a "new head" so I'd be very careful not to get it too tight. You can see the magnet going down to make it tighter or up to make it looser if look underneath the coil. You just want it strong enough to snap the coil on his head, it shouldn't leave an imprint or anything, that would be too tight. If it gets red, back the magnet off a bit. I know how nervous I was to mess w/all the equipment at first...but this is how you learn, you'll do fine!!

Hello! We just had the very same problem with the H3 error and I was very relieved it was only the coil! Our magnets were pretty darn simple to screw out using only our fingers, but I have had to break out the screw driver one time before.

I am also expecting number two in February and we are very excited. I am really looking forward to finding out the sex that way I can prepare Tayten for his/her arrival. He is going to be an excellent big brother!

Just turn it like a screw until it comes out (make a note of the position first so you can duplicate it in the new coil.)

I recently had to replace both of mine due to fraying. . . just found out that it is a design flaw which Cochlear has fixed.

Love your updates!
