then I don't know what will...
(From Washington, DC Craigslist)
I am a Deaf/hoh college-bound (NOT special ed) high school senior attending DC's #1 public high school, Wilson SHS, and unfortunately dealing with a lack of qualified interpreter two days a week. I'm looking for someone who is fluent in ASL, NOT signed English. The job will be under contract with an agency running under DCPS (Hands in Motion).
Hours are 8:45am to 3:15pm, every Tuesday and Thursday until the end of the school year (or for as long as you can). You would also have a 2 1/2 HOUR BREAK between 10:15 and 12:45 (I do not have class during that time). The school is in Tenleytown, so you are less than a 5 minute walk away from several restaraunts, fast food places, Whole Foods, CVS, etc. The school is directly accross from the Tenleytown/AU metro station. There is also virtually no real dress code, so you can come dressed as you'd like to.
Unfortunately my situation has become desperate enough that I have to resort to posting on Craigslist. My current Tues/Thurs interpreter signs in exact English (and not even very well) so it is not working out at all. The agency, Hands in Motion, is not taking care of the situation quickly enough, so I am taking matters into my own hands.
Experience/years in the business/certification/CODA status/education are unimportant. All I want (and need) is someone good. This could even be an internship position for an interpreting student (for instance, from Gallaudet).
***EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT AN INTERPRETER OR ONLY MILDLY INTERESTED/NOT INTERESTED IN THIS JOB, IF YOU KNOW ANY INTERPRETERS WHO MAY BE INTERESTED, PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO THEM. IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR ME THAT MAY HELP ME FIND AN INTERPRETER, PLEASE LET ME KNOW*** Thank you!!

Bless his heart :( I have wanted for a while to learn sign...and have thought about being certified as an interpreter (and I'm deaf as a post...like that's gonna help...but I WILL hear soon!). Apparently there's a niche for interpreters still...I hate that this kid has to do without :( Thanks for sharing :)
Oh my gosh! If he can't find an interpreter in DC, with Gallaudet right there, I can't imagine where he could find one!
That is scary.
