If you would've asked me last year if I wanted an FM system for my kid, I would've looked you in the eyes and asked you why you were being so cheap, especially since iPods are quite affordable these days. I mean, with XM Radio and Sirius, why do you need an FM System?
Now, one year later, the term FM System has nothing to do with boom-boxes, and little clock radios. Today, an FM System is just one more way for Christian to get more access to language, and I am BEYOND excited to get one for him!
We started discussing the possibility of an FM System with our EI team about a month ago. I learned alot about the use of these systems--I knew they were used in schools for years, but in MY house. How COOL! Now that the monkey is more than on the move, and is very close to walking (i.e. running away from Mommy), I know the days of speaking to him 6 inches from his face all day are all but gone. Using an FM system in our house will help him hear me when his back is turned (or when he is race crawling away from me).
We found out that with a little modification, and a purchase of some adapters, we could hook Christian up to our very own system in the coming up weeks. This is just another way for us to expose him to as much spoken language as possible. To think that my deaf kid might be able to OVERHEAR me talking while his back is turned to me in another room? AWESOME! To think that he actually might OVERHEAR me as I accidently drop the F-Bomb....terrifying. I'm working on that....

I just stumbled on to your blog today and I LOVE IT!!! My husband and I are the parents of 3 beautiful boys, two of whom are Deaf! We have no other family members who are Deaf, so obviously we were incredibly shocked when our first son, who is now 5, was born and thought it was "just a fluke," especially after our 2nd son, age 3, was born with normal hearing. We again are living the rollercoaster with our almost 1 year old son. I am a speech language pathologist and my husband is a pediatrician, so we too look like we have "IT" together, but in all reality, I sometimes struggle daily, even though all 3 of our children are blossoming more and more every day! Our oldest son, Jack is in kindergarten, and looks and TALKS like any other boy his age. He is even reading!!! Christian is lucky to have you for a mom! What a great blog!
That's great! I can't wait to hear how it goes. I know what you mean about the cursing, though. They seem to "pick it up" much earlier than we actually stop using it in front of them... Now that I've all but stopped slipping in front of Caroline, I find myself appearing more and more like a sailor when she's not around. That's me, class up the @ss...
I wonder if digital FM is available - I've heard you get an extra three NPR stations. Who knew there was a market for a 24 hr bluegrass station (except for Nat)?

I loved FM in school, I use to be able to hear EVERYTHING!
My daughters use an FM system in school, and we actually purchased one for home use as well. We had high hopes about using it on the soccer field, but we have some high power electrical lines above the soccer complex that seem to interfere :( Anyway- it's awesome! You'll love using it, and when he is old enough (and you trust him outside alone), you can call him to come in w/ out screaming- he he. I tested ours w/ my oldest daughter, and she could hear me all the way up at the top of our street!
