What We're Working on Tuesday-New Maps and IEP Week

Reason #8,589,012 I love Christian's school: Onsite Mapping/Programming by our fantastic Cochlear Implant audiologist. HOORAY! Our audiologist also worked for Cochlear and was on the development team for the Nucleus 5. Expert much? LOVE IT.

Christian was mapped yesterday and while things didn't change too much, his high frequencies were upped a little bit. As most CI Mommas can attest, the day of/day after mappings are a bit touch and go. An adult user once told me that she feels like she was up pulling an all nighter after her mapping sessions. Christian definitely was a bit whiny and pooped out, but he is adjusting just fine to his new maps. He'll be tested on Wednesday so we can get a full report of where he's hearing.

Did I mention that this week is our IEP week with his school? And did I mention I'm not even worried about it because reason #8,589,013 why I love his school is because IEPs are collaborative and goal centered? I actually am LOOKING FORWARD to our meeting this Friday. I can't wait to set our goals for the rest of this school year and summer. 66

Mapping Update

We had an appointment up at Hopkins this morning---complete with an audiogram and some tweaking on Christian's map.

Other than being the typical 2 year old, the appointment went well. He does great with voice recognition in the booth, but I have to question the reliability right now of his responses. His audiogram today showed he was hearing at 25-20 across the board in his CI ear. I honestly believe he is hearing better than that, just given how he responds everyday. Also, in past testing, he's measured at 20 across all frequencies. Luckily, his school audi is also planning on doing some testing next week just to see how he does.

Christian's map was adjusted just slightly, and I understand now that his volume was increased just a bit more. We decided to keep the Whisper program, even though we really haven't seen a difference with him using that and his regular everyday program.

I really like our audiologist at Hopkins. I always feel like she manages to get an appropriate and accurate map on Christian. Judging from his progress (3-4 word sentences consistently now!), his past maps have been pretty good!

We also spoke with our audiologist about getting our little girl scheduled for an ABR. While we technically can't schedule it until she is born, we were assured we won't have as long of a wait time as we did with Christian.

We won't have to go back for another mapping appointment until May. And, we scheduled it on Christian's 1 year hearing birthday...

25dbs BABY!

Today we had Christian's 4th mapping at Hopkins and we were SO thrilled when he had consistent repeatable responses at 25db-ACROSS ALL FREQUENCIES. Check out the Speech Banana so you can get an idea of where he is hearing now. Even though his aids amplified him up to 45db, he never had access to sounds higher than 750hz. With his implant, Christian now has access to almost all of the SPEECH SOUNDS. This technology truly is a miracle.

His map was adjusted and turned up a bit more, and we have 4 new programs to try. Christian is constantly amazing us with how fabulous he is doing with his implant, and we can't wait to see what these new programs can do for him. We haven't started our official aural rehabilitation through Hopkins yet due to some scheduling conflicts there on their time (although we are going to speak with a SLP tomorrow about getting things scheduled), but we have been working around the clock with Christian on his listening and speaking skills. My Event Planning skills are definitely getting rusty, but I am sure that I can give some of the SLPs a run for their money these days! It seems like everyday he has a new word or sound. His new favorite words are Ketchup and Hot Dog. Such a boy.
